More than 1,000 health care workers, who are members of the PEI Union of Public Sector Employees (PEI UPSE/NUPGE), have a new collective agreement. Referee Thomas Kuttner handed down the award earlier this week. The negotiating team worked hard to develop the agreement and the team joined together through a lengthy negotiation process. The ratification kits were distributed in April and the ratification meeting and vote followed on 11 May. Negotiations between PEI UPSE and the Department of Health and Welfare began in April 2009 and were transferred to conciliation in March 2010, following the lack of agreement between the negotiating teams. Conciliation did not bring the parties together and monetary issues were an important stumbling block. Subsequently, PEI UPSE and the Department of Health and Welfare introduced a mandatory interest rate arbitrage procedure on 21 September, 22 September and 1 October 2010. The AIC employs 44 PEI UPSE members and the union does not support the government`s decision to relocate workers.

Charlottetown (Oct 21, 2010) – The more than 1,000 PEI UPSE members working for the provincial government`s Department of Health and Welfare have a renewed collective agreement, which will be retroactively renewed from April 2009 to March 31, 2012.
